Coast Chapter Minutes for November 18, 2017
Meeting to Order: 1:08 PM
Attendance: 9members & 2 guests including guest speaker
Pledges of Allegiance & SAR
Guest: Bob Peak who has been working on his lineage for
about a year. Some of Bob’s ancestors were originally indentured servants and
can be traced to Grayson Co., VA circa 1797. Bob has Revolutionary War vets
including service with the 1st Unit of the MD line and another at the
Battle of Brooklyn. Pending.
An application for Douglas Evans has been approved.
Secretary’s Report: Motion (Tissue) to waive the reading of
minutes from the October meeting, seconded (Scully). Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: $4642.28 current account balance. 6
members are unpaid as of this accounting.
Guest Speaker: Ann Kitajima, Asst. Director for the Morro
Bay National Estuary Program. Ann has degrees conferred by UC Berkeley and UC
Irvine. MBNEP is a local non-profit that brings together citizens, government,
non-profits and landowners to protect and restore the estuary. MBNEP is one of
28 nationwide. It competes for grants from the EPA and other sources. The
program is non regulatory.
Tests and studies monitor inner bay health in an effort to make
it safe for recreation, commercial oyster farms and eelgrass. MBNEP focuses on toxic
runoff, derelict boats, recycling and pet clean up.
MBNEP also enjoys the safe harbor designation which brings
in federal money for dredging to keep the channel clear.
Ms. Kitajima’s presentation was warmly received. Ann was
presented a certificate and cannon.
