The Central Coast Chapter makes donation to For The Troops

President Steve Scully and Treasurer Bill Harris (not pictured) from the Central Coast Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution present a $700.00 check to Si Tenenberg and his volunteer organization, Care Packs for the Troops.   Si and his dedicated volunteers send care packs to the Middle-East and Africa in support of the men and women who are in harms way.  Si’s philosophy is to provide for the specific needs of the soldiers.  These needs are identified through the exchange of emails with the men and women in the field.  Since 2006, Si Tenenberg and his volunteers have sent over 20,000 boxes of supplies.  This effort is supported through donations by service organizations, the Dollar Store and everyday citizens.  If you wish to donate to this worthy cause, please go to http://troopcarepacks.org.

The Central Coast Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) have long been a supporter of Si Tenenberg’s efforts. The purpose of the SAR are patriotic, historical and educational.  We have a proud record of supporting law enforcement, military, and fire safety officials for their outstanding service.  We support local schools, ROTC and boy scouts by recognizing outstanding individual achievements.  We preserve the records of Revolutionary War Patriots, and encourage historical research of the American Revolution.  Any male who is a lineal descendent of an ancestor who supported the war for American Independence is eligible for membership.  We are actively seeking new members.  For information about applying for membership, please contact Russ Haynes at 805 710 4813.

Meeting Minutes for May 19, 2018

Central Coast Chapter Minutes for May 19, 2018

Meeting to Order:  1:05 PM

Pledges of Allegiance & SAR

Attendance: 11 including 8 members

Sunshine Report: Gary Cooper was welcomed back.

Guest Speaker: John Siler introduced Rachel Ross from Morro Bay. Rachel described her early career as one of a wordsmith but in fact is more eclectic than that. Rachel was born in San Francisco but grew up in LA. She possesses a degree in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz. Rachel is the mother of two. Rachel has been a radio host, a KQED documentarian who worked with Bill Moyers, an improvisational comic and a story-slammer.

At present, Rachel performs reboots (stories reaffirming Jewish traditions), story slams to SRO crowds at Top Dog Café in Morro Bay and does similarly at Linnea's Café in SLO for open mike night.

Rachel decided to share the story of her parents and the Jewish experience in the 20th century. Rachel’s father typed his autobiography late in life and in just 4 days. Leonard Ross was born in NYC to Polish Jewish immigrants but orphaned at age 13. Rachel’s mother, Estelle was born in 1915 in Winnipeg, Canada to Russian Jewish immigrants. During the Depression, Leonard obtained a GED, a BA and a Law degree. During the same period, Estelle moved to San Francisco and made clothing. In WWII, Leonard stationed in England, served as a logistics officer in preparation for DDay. After the war, Leonard visited Dachau concentration camp and he recounted that surreal experience. Rachel read excerpts from Leonard’s manuscript.

Back at home, Leonard was invited to come to CA and be an Electric Vacuum Cleaner salesman. In 1947, Leonard and Estelle met on a double date, married and went into the clothing business. They were successful.

Rachel next shared an anecdote from when she was a student a San Francisco City College and as a part of a class on Russian Civilization, she traveled to the USSR. Her hotel was spartan and faced Red Square. The constant military presence and an insect bite sent her home prematurely and much to her relief.

Rachel’s presentation was warmly received and she was presented a certificate and cannon.

Guests: Ray Duquette from the Kern Co. chapter and Dan Friend a potential new member.

Secretary’s Report: None

Treasurer’s Report: Current balance is $3583.34.

Old Business: Secretary Scrimiger made a short report on the CASSAR Spring Meeting in Concord, CA.

New Business: Props to Dr. Miller for helping with the traveling Viet Nam Wall installation.

Central Coast Chapter Minutes for March 17, 2018

Central Coast Chapter Minutes for March 17, 2018

Meeting to Order:  1:07 PM

Pledges of Allegiance & SAR

Attendance: 8 including 3 guests

Sunshine Report: Gordon Wiley still unable to attend.

Guest Speaker: John Siler introduced SLO Co. District Attorney Dan Dow. Mr. Dow is currently running for re-election in June. Mr. Dow first visited our chapter four and a half years ago at which time he became friends with our late compatriot, William Siler. Mr. Dow remembered Bill as a great American patriot owing to his WWII service in both the US Army Air Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Dan Dow is a graduate of the US Army Defense Language Institute in Monterey with a certification in Korean. Following Army active duty Dan enrolled at and later received his Bachelor’s degree from CSU Hayward. Following that Dan earned a J.D. from University of Santa Clara.

The receipt of a law degree led to continued service in the California National Guard as a Major Command Judge Advocate.  Mr. Dow was deployed in both Iraq and Kosovo.

As a Deputy DA and now as DA, Dan has focused on domestic violence, crimes against children and human trafficking. Dan was also instrumental in developing a Veteran’s Court specifically for combat veterans who’ve had brushes with the law and may be in the throes of PTSD. Dan oversees the Veteran’s Court himself.

Dan also mentioned recent significant prosecutions including the cases of human trafficking. Human traffickers Richard Scott Brooks and Oscar Higueros received 65 years to life and 168 years to life respectively. Mr. Dow emphasized that there is often a gang aspect to these types of crimes and that SLO Co. is proactive in its gang suppression efforts.

SLO Co. now has a digital facility at Camp SLO designed for forensic searches of computers, devices, phones et al. The new marijuana law’s impact is still unknown but cultivation must comport with state law while the Feds will monitor exportation.

Once again, Mr. Dow’s presentation was well received and he was presented with a certificate of that appreciation.

Special guests Jim Fosdyck, President of CASSAR and his wife, Un Hui Yi, President for the Women’s Auxiliary were introduced.

President Fosdyck encouraged the Chapter to send someone to the CASSAR Spring Meeting in Concord, CA which convenes on April 19 through April 21. Jim also asked that we consider identifying someone deserving of a flag certificate.

Un Hui Yi was kind enough to present Dan Dow with a Viet Nam Veteran’s Commemorative coin in recognition for his service on behalf of vets.

Motion (Scully) the chapter will cover the hotel and registration expenses (maximum $900.00) for a member to attend the CASSAR Annual Spring Meeting in Concord, CA. Seconded (Harris). President Scully will canvass the membership via email to elicit a quorum and approval.

Meeting Minutes for the Central Coast Chapter SAR, 17 Feb. 2018

Minutes of Central Coast Chapter of SAR, Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018

Michael Buckman received Supplemental Recognition.

Chris has the flu and was thoughtful enough to not share it with us.  Ergo,  no previous meeting minutes were available to read but could be read at the next meeting. Gary Cooper is under the weather, also.

The Treasurer reported a balance of $4,841.30.

Our speaker was introduced by John Siler with some amusing anecdotal math humor...If there is such a thing.

Guest Speaker

Barry Garelick, an author of two books; Letters From John Dewey,  And Letters From Huck Finn, was our very well prepared and learned speaker.  He is a Michigan graduate with advanced degrees from other places and Federal Employment in his background.  He discussed in considerable detail the current state of  Mathematics as being taught  at levels beginning at home (somewhat discouraged), going from K to 12 and into college and beyond.  The evolution, the beginning of which isn’t clear to me-but sometime in the last century, I think, includes traditional math (memorization-pretty much out of use),  New Math (launched in the sixties with Sputnik and failing in the seventies),  followed by something created by NCTM (National Council of Math Teachers) in 1989 that might work.  Don’t know!  The upshot of all this (my interpretation) is that computers and calculators in the hands of the generation now being educated and one day to be in charge have  replaced the formerly required skills of being able to do addition,  multiplication tables, and long division on paper with pen or pencil. Oh,  Dear!

Barry says there’s hope,  however.    His daughter Angie was in attendance.  She very likely can do math in her head!

There was no old  or new business,  and following The S. A. R. closing Pledge,   we adjourned at about 1430 hours.

Respectfully and one hopes somewhat accurately submitted in substitution for the real Secretary,
David Atlee Tissue

Barry Garelick

“Math Education in the U.S.: Still Crazy After All These Years”

“Letter from John Dewey/Letters from Huck Finn: A Look At Math Education from the Inside”

Barry Garelick is a parent and advocate for better mathematics programs in U.S. Schools. He has a degree in mathematics from University of Michigan and after retiring from the federal government, has recently received his California credential to teach math in secondary schools. Central Coast Chapter Minutes for January 20, 2018

Meeting to Order: 1:05 PM

Pledges of Allegiance & SAR

Attendance: 11 Members and our guest speaker

New officers were sworn in by former CASSAR VP Derek Brown. The Annual Spring Meeting will be held April 19-21 in Concord, CA. The CASSAR newsletter is available on line although you can arrange to receive a hard copy for an extra $10. According to Mr. Brown, NSSAR has a goal of 9% growth this year.

Sunshine Report: Gordon Wiley was unable to attend.

Guest Speaker: Tina Metzger, a former 1978 body surfing champion from San Clemente, possesses a B.S. in Landscape Architecture and an M.S. in City & Regional Planning, both from Cal Poly. Professionally, Tina operates Tina Metzger Enterprises, an architectural and environmental planning concern. Tina is also an adjunct instructor at Cal Poly.

Tina ran for mayor of Morro Bay in 2016 because she had become alarmed by the tactics used by the city to fast track large projects without due diligence or oversight. Of particular interest to Tina was a $167 million sewer project to be built in close proximity to her home. Homeowners received no notice and the city produced no EIR. Tina went door to door to advise her neighbors and hundreds showed at the next advisory meeting. The city council was at first unsympathetic but finally resolved to use an alternate site. Tina lost her mayoral bid to the incumbent by 208 votes. Tina wants people to be engaged and not let government be conducted in secrecy. She is undecided about a future mayoral run. Tina was presented a certificate and cannon in appreciation.
