The October meeting of the Central Coast Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be held at the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum on October 12 at noon.

The museum is located at 801 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo.  The entrance is on the lower level of the Veterans Hall in the rear of the building.

 On Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at the IHOP in SLO, we held a meeting of the Central Coast Chapter of the SAR.  The attendance was mostly longtime members.  The guest speaker was Nate Maas, and his presentation was on the prisoners of the Rev War and their situation, which was deployable.  

Also, a new member, Russell Taylor, was welcomed to the chapter.  We have a photo, but I'm having trouble with my computer, so the photo is not available. 

If you have something noteworthy and relative the American Revolutionary War, please forward a copy and photos and I'll post it our blog.

2. Induction of new members
3. Presentation by Susan Cox, President SLO Genealogical Society.  Susan will discuss her organization but more importantly the research room which the Society maintains in the SLO Library.  An excellent source for research which her group staffs during the week.

Compatriot Steve Scully Travels To Cloverdale Indiana to Honor Rev War Ancestor & Soldier.

 

In October, Compatriot Steve Scully of our Chapter traveled to Cloverdale Indiana to witness the tribute and honor paid to Revolutionary War soldier, Jacob Piercy.  Jacob Piercy, who is Scully’s 4th great grandfather was honored by members of the John Martin Chapter of Indiana (SAR) for his service in the Revolutionary War.  Moreover, Jacob was recognized by Descendants of Valley Forge (DVF) for his service with General George Washington at Vally Forge during the winter encampment of 1777-1778.  Members from the Indiana brigade of DVF were also on-hand to honor Jacob Piercy.

Jacob Piercy was born in 1759 in Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania, 2nd Regiment under the command of Captain Bankston.  Jacob was a fifer/drummer.  After the war, Jacob married Abby McDowell in 1794 and eventually settled in Kentucky.  Jacob and Abby raised a large family of 13 children and eventually removed to Cloverdale, Indiana in 1822.  Jacob died in 1831 and is buried along with his wife and several of his children in the Cloverdale Cemetery.  

The John Martin Chapter of SAR is to be commended and congratulated for a beautiful and moving ceremony.  Members and other volunteers gave unselfishly of their time to arrange and participate in this ceremony.

The Central Coast Chapter met on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the IHOP Restaurant, on Madonna Rd, San Luis Obispo.  The turn-out was, to say the least, miserable; only nine members attended.  Since there was not a quorum, we had lunch and a gab fest. 

We were notified by the management of IHOP that in the future, unless the total of the meals was at least $125.00, we would have to pay that amount as a minimum fee for the facilitates.  It was suggested that we consider a ZOOM meeting in December and that's probably what will happen.

Perhaps those who decided not to attend the meeting could suggest some alternative for future meetings.  If you want to make some suggestions, send an email to our president, Steve Scully at:  sses@charter.net

2/27/2021

 Anneke Talke, 16 years old is honored by the Central Coast Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for being the first female scout in San Luis Obispo county to be certified rank of Eagle Scout.  Anneke is home-schooled and is also taking college courses through Cuesta and Cal Poly. Anneke’s goal is to one day work in the field of Neurosciences. Anneke enjoys singing, playing the piano, swimming, reading and loves spending time with her family.

 On February 27, 2021, members of SAR gathered at Mission Plaza to award Anneke a Certificate of Recognition and Eagle Scout medal.  Anneke, who is a member of Troop # 323, was presented with $200 for her remarkable accomplishment and to help further her education.  Pictured below is Anneke’s proud father, Stephan and William Crewe of the Boy Scouts of America.

President Scully called the meeting to order at 1:05pm.  Due to time constraints on the part of the guest speaker, Dawn Addis, she was allowed to give her presentation at the beginning of the meeting.  Patriot John Siler introduced Dawn Addis’s, who is the Democratic Candidate for the 35^th Assembly District.  This district covers all of San Luis Obispo County and extends to the northern part of Santa Barbara County.  Dawn Addis’ background is in education and as a community organizer.  At present, besides being a member of Morro Bay city council, Dawn is involved in the education and mentoring local teachers.  Dawn’s campaign advocates for increased housing, clean water security, improved infrastructure and local jobs.  Dawn distinguishes herself from her opponent by being more accessible and more proactive in creating economic and social opportunities.

Dawn Addis was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Guest Speaker – Victoria Huessen of Cambria was introduced and she is a county librarian at the Los Osos branch. Victoria encouraged everyone to obtain a power library card and take advantage of our local libraries. Victoria discussed the relevance of libraries in the digital age and pointed out that all matter of printed material ( newspapers, periodicals, hard copy best sellers etc.), audio visual, DVD/Blu Ray and gaming are available. Downloadables are also available. Global Road Warrior is a portal to travel sites. DMV driver license tests are on line. Computers and Wifi are available as are chromebooks. Children’s programs are ubiquitous.

Zip Books is a program whereby if you can find a title of a book on Amazon and it’s not currently available in the county library system, you can suggest it and your library may acquire it subject to budgetary constraints. The website is slolibrary.org. Victoria encouraged membership in Friends of the Library. A library assessment has also been proposed. Victoria’s presentation was much appreciated and she was presented a certificate.

Kalleen Corley representing “Shower The People” spoke on the important work they were doing in SLO.  About Shower the People

Our vision for a mobile shower for the homeless began in 2014 when a group from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in San Luis Obispo attended a conference in Santa Barbara. Showers of Blessing had their mobile shower unit on site for all to view. Volunteers for their program spoke to us about their successful shower program that provides showers to the homeless in Santa Barbara County. All of us from San Luis Obispo agreed that a mobile shower program was needed for the homeless in San Luis Obispo County too.

From that day forward a committed group of volunteers has planned and built the underpinnings of a mobile shower program for San Luis Obispo County. Shower the People became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in May of 2017. Our mission is to provide access to a warm shower to every man and woman of the homeless in our community as possible. Our program is entirely supported by grants and donations from religious (interfaith) churches, organizations and individual donors in our community. Our program is run by volunteers like you.

7.     Motion made by Treasurer Harris to donate $100.00 to Shower the People. Motion was seconded by President Scully.  Unanimously passed.

8.    Certificate of Appreciation and a donation of $100.00 to Shower the People organization presented to the Kalleen Corey.

9.    New Compatriot Anthony Cangelosi welcomed to the chapter and presented with his SAR certificate. 

10. The Military Service Medal Award Certificate and medals were presented to Compatriot William Crewe.

Guests & Speakers: Introduction by Russ Haynes as the late Gary Cooper’s family were acknowledged. Vonda, Gary’s wife, Shaun and Renne, Gary’s children were introduced with Russ providing a fitting tribute to the compatriot who was like a swiss army knife. He did everything.

Everything in the furtherance of this chapter and we are thankful.


Guest speaker Richard Potter from the SLO Chapter #45 of Disabled American Veterans was introduced. DAV if a national nonprofit designed to provide disabled veterans with assistance in interacting with the VA and other departments, finding meaningful employment and otherwise dealing with a lifetime of impairment. Nationally, over one million disabled vets have received assistance with over 600,000 simply receiving rides to medical appointments.


Locally, SLO Chapter #45 just held their annual pancake breakfast raising $3800.00 including a contribution from the DAR. Kelsey Winery of See Cyn recently donated a $1000.00. Services include transition assistance, handicap ramps and the local also belongs to the Veterans Collaborative.
