Guest Speaker: John Siler introduced SLO Poet Laureate Ivan Brown Otter. Ivan attended Central Michigan University and was a nationally ranked 400 meter hurdler. Following college in 1964, Ivan landed a teaching job in L.A. with a contract for $6000.00 per annum. After that, Ivan taught at a Navajo reservation in No. Arizona for 4 years followed by Roswell, New Mexico. Ivan entertained our group with readings and poems including “Opening Their Journals at the Navajo School” and “Indian Time”.
As Poet Laureate, Ivan tours high schools in SLO mostly and gives readings and recitations of his works. By the way, Ivan is often mistaken for the actor Christopher Lloyd. Ivan’s presentation was warmly received and he was presented with a certificate and cannon.
